In part 1 of The
Sil Chronicles, Sil arrives on Sor3 for final entrance exams,
accompanied by Yalat, who is a smart blue dinosaur and also a
personal tutor. Sil meets Alaban, whom she has not seen for years.
He is as talented as Sil and then some. He vacilates between
buffoonery and serious seductive reasoning because he craves
her attention and her approval. After he leaves, Sil and several
others from the Organization Center become the victims of an
airbus crash, which turns out to be a terrorist hit from within
the Organization. Sil survives thanks to the healing powers of
the Torreons who somehow anticipated the crash, but did not try
to prevent it or other deaths .
In part 2, Sil undergoes a training battery including real
life spy situations. She works closely with the Torreon commander,
Wilbaht, who becomes a father figure to her and with Klib and
Ocelot, two humans who are more at odds with her than on her
side. Alaban reappears at leave time to sweep her off her feet
for a few days, but orders get in the way and they find themselves
pulled in opposite directions by their Organization generals.
Alaban gravitates toward the Fitmalo leaders while Sil tries
to convince him otherwise. During their next separation, Sil's
crew covers a Fitmalo convention where she is approached by representatives
of the same faction courting Alaban's allegiance. She rejects
them and causes greater stress within her own crew. Ocelot invites
the crew to his former hometown on leave to show off and Sil
feels ostracized and lonesome without Alaban.
In part 3, Sil meets Alaban again under the direst of circumstances.
The two Organization factions go head to head and Alaban makes
a treacherous choice, forcing Sil to take a stand. Bloody battles
ensue, traitors and spies are revealed. The remains of Wilbaht's
crew excapes to the Vermillion planet. The dwindling number of
loyalists cower in fear. Separation is definitive. Their worlds
change dramatically.
In part 4, everything has changed. The temporary state of
peace while in hiding comes to an end and a final standoff goes
in no way at all as planned. The atonement Sil and Alaban had
hoped for so long ago is acheived in a shocking end between new
life and final sacrifice. |
